Funcom and The Bearded Ladies have taken the wraps off Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, a tactical adventure game that combines the turn-based tactical combat of XCOM with real-time exploration and stealth-based gameplay.
Set on a post-human Earth, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden features ragtag team including a Dux the, er, talking duck, and Bormin the boar, exploring abandoned cities, ruined highways and dangerous countryside in an attempt to find the legendary Eden.
From the looks of things, Mutant Year Zero is actually Bearded Ladies’ first game, although the Swedish developer has a number of Hitman leads and the designer of Payday on board. The fusion of tactical gameplay with adventure certainly sounds unique and should go a long way to setting MYZ apart from the armies of XCOM clones out there. It’s art direction also appears to be unique, particularly in its depiction of a post-human world filled with anthropomorphic mutants.
“It’s an unusual label for a game, but tactical adventure really fits the bill, no duck pun intended,” says executive producer Ulf Andersson from Bearded Ladies. “Our goal is to blend the deep and tactical combat of ‘XCOM’ with a branching storyline that unfolds as you explore overgrown forests and abandoned cities with your team of Mutants. Mixing that with real-time stealth gameplay gives you a unique way to approach or avoid combat situations you encounter while exploring.”
